PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Founded by Srikrishna Acharya Chowdhury, a Varendra Brahmin, and a revenue officer of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, Nawab Nazim of Bengal 1703/1727, and who received the ijaradari of Alaphshahi pargana, one of the 22 estates of Bengal. After the death of Isha Khan, three more parganas were added to the estate. While returning from Murshidabad by boat, a local artisan named Muktaram Karmakar, presented him with a gold lamp-stand, called Gacha in Bengali. The Zamindar, in an effort to acknowledge the gift and to show respect to the presenter, renamed the town to Muktagacha. Estate holders were....

Raja BAKUL ACHARYA CHOWDHURY, Zamindar of Muktagacha -/1971, educated privately initially, then received a post-graduate degree in Philosophy and a B.A. in Mathematics, married and had issue, eight children. He was killed by the Pakistani Army during the Liberation War of 1971 and is now recognized as a ‘Martyr’ by the Government of Bangladesh.

Maharaja SHASHI KANT ACHARYA CHOUDHURY, Zamindar of Mymensingh, Raja of Muktagacha, Mymensingh; he was granted the title of Raja Bahadur as a personal distinction in January 1913; married and had issue, leaving three sons and three daughters. He died on or about 31st May 1944 aged 59.

Kumar Snehansu Kanta Acharya, educated at the Scottish Church College, and the University of Calcutta, he studied and passed the exams of Barrister-at-Law from the Inns of Court in London; member of the Indian Students Group Movement; former Advocate General of West Bengal and C.P.I. (Marxist) leader, he was awarded the Order of Merit of Syria in 1957; married Srimati Supriya Devi, born 1922, died 31st October 2002 in Kolkata, Member, State Control Commission of the C.P.I.(Marxist), and a leader of the women's movement, an author and translator of note, she had published works of the the Chinese poet, Lu Shun; she was also involved with the Asiatic Society and the Indo Soviet Cultural Society; and had issue, a son and a daughter.

Maharaja SITANGSHU KANTA ACHARYA Bahadur, Zamindar of Mymensingh, Raja of Muktagacha, married Srimati Maharani Reba Acharya, and had issue, two sons. He died on or about 5th June 1952.
